For what is possibly the most beautiful view of Halong Bay, you will need to climb Bai Tho mountain. Most tourists who visit Halong Bay head directly from Hanoi to their cruise and see very little, if any of the mainland. It’s a real pity because Halong City has a lot to offer visitors – including some phenomenol views from the “Instafamous” Poem/Bai Tho mountain. But is Bai Tho Mountain closed? Well, techinically yes. But it’s still possible to do a Bai Tho mountain hike.

The poem mountain viewpoint of Halong Bay has become famous on Instagram, and for very good reason. If you’ve seen beautiful photos of Halong Bay that have inspired you to visit the area, it’s likely views from Bai Tho mountain. While the Bay cruises are definitely the highlight here, I also want to encourage you to stop off on the mainland.

The views of Halong Bay from Bai Tho mountain are truly breathtaking. Think open waters as far as the eye can see, and beautiful karst cliffs. It’s difficult to beat these views.

The Bai Tho mountain trail is actually closed to the public. It’s considered risky and the climb was quite a bit tougher than I expected it to be. But, the views from the top are certainly worth it. Since it’s not an official “hike” and is closed to the public, finding the trail is not easy. You need to know where to look, and will also need to climb through a small hole in a fence to begin the trail. You can follow my step by step guide for climbing Bai Tho mountain below.

Tip: You should spend three weeks in Vietnam if you want to explore all that this beautiful country has to offer.

Climbing Bai Tho Mountain

Bai Tho mountain is one of the highest mountains in Halong Bay and is situated in Halong city center, right in the bayside. From afar the mountain looks like a huge castle with three undulating towers on the solid walls. But, of course, it’s all about the view from the top.

Halong Bay is a truly magical place. With its beautiful emerald waters and thousands of limestone islands that outline the horizon, it’s one of the most beautiful landscapes that I’ve ever seen. Halong Bay translates to “Descending Dragon.” The rock formations were said to be formed by dragons spitting jewels out into the sea to create a protective barrier from invading ships. Hence the name of the area “Descending Dragon.”

To fully embrace the wonder of Ha Long you should definitely take a boat cruise. But, if you want to get a stunning aerial view of the area, then look no further than Bai Tho mountain.

What To Know Before You Climb Bai Tho Mountain

The climb to the top is not easy. Bai Tho Mountain is closed to the public and is therefore not easily accessible. However, most tourists in the area do it anyway, and for good reason – the views. Here’s some things you should know before climbing Bai Tho Mountain.

You’re not actually allowed to hike here. There’s a big red sign (pictured below) with “Dangerous area” printed in bold letters. So yes, it’s irresponsible. But everyone knows about it and most tourists do it.

Since the “entrance” gate is closed off, you will need to climb through a small hole in the fence to begin the walk.

You will have to find a local and pay them a small fee to direct you to the “entrance.”

The walk up will take about 30 minutes

Take water with you. We didn’t and we really needed it.

I have seen many photos on Instagram of girls in beautiful dresses at the top of Bai Tho mountain and I have no idea how they did it. I don’t think I’ve ever sweated as much as I did on this walk up. Don’t let those photo’s fool you. I would highly recommend dressing practically and wearing comfortable shoes.

Below is my step by step guide to climbing Bai Tho mountain.

How To Get The Best Views of Halong Bay 1. Make your way to Hang Noi Road

Just about everyone in Halong city knows that Bai Tho mountain is a tourist hotspot. So mention it to your taxi driver and he will most likely know what you are talking about. Otherwise just put Hang Noi into your GPS. It doesn’t matter where you get dropped off in Hang Noi road, the locals will direct you to where you need to go.

We were very confused when we first got out of the taxi. We started walking down the street, with no clue about where to go. But within about two minutes a local lady pointed us in the right direction. She knew what we were there for. She then passed us onto another lady who showed us the way to the entrance.

2. Find the right entrance

Some people apparently get taken through a locals house, so it just depends on who you come across. All of the locals that we came across were very friendly. Most of them can’t speak English (which was our experience throughout most of our Vietnam trip), but they were all smiles and more than happy to show us the way.

3. Pay the entrance fee

Once you are led through the passageway or a locals house, they will ask you to pay small entrance fee. The fee varies, I guess depending on who you are dealing with and how much they feel like charging. But it’s nothing extortionate, and I think it’s quite reasonable given that they show you the way and allow you into their personal space to reach the Bai Tho mountain entrance.

We paid 100,000 VND ($4) for the two of us. We were happy to pay that so didn’t even try negotigate. But there was a couple who we had met along the way (while looking for the entrance) and they negotiated to pay 70,000 VND. Some people even report paying only 10,000 VND, while others have paid as much as 100,000 VND each. So it really just depends. But if you feel like you are being overcharged, you can try haggle. If you tell them that you only have a certain amount, they will most likely settle for what you offer.

Update: As of November 2024, a fellow traveller has let me know that they are now charging 500,000 VND per person.

4. Climb through the hole in the fence

Once you have paid your “entrance fee” you’re on your own. Just follow the pathway around the back of a building and you will find yourself at the “entrance” gate. Old articles state that you climb over the gate. But, the gate has since been fenced up with barbed wire – making it impossible to climb over.

Some “good citizen” (haha) has now cut a small hole in the fence and you will need to climb through here to begin the Bai Tho mountain trail. It’s a little tricky because you have to climb up a few rocks to reach the hole, but it’s very doable. Getting up wasn’t to bad – I was more worried about getting back down. But thankfully I was fine.

Update: There is apparently now a guard situated at the gate, and he opens the gate for visitors. So there may be no need to climb through the hole anymore.

5. Begin the hike

Now you can finally begin the hike. There are steps leading up most of the way, but when you get closer to the top it turns to rocks. It’s not a tough hike, but I found it to be quite strenuous. We had to stop to take a break quite a few times on our way up. Also, the sweat was literally dripping off my face. I’m not sure if it was the heat or because I hadn’t eaten enough that day, but I really struggled on my way up.

But once at the top, my peace of mind was restored. The views are truly incredible. I would love to have been here for sunrise or sunset, but I wouldn’t recommended walking the trail after dark. The trail isn’t lit up so I think it would be quite difficult and dangerous to walk it in little to no light.

6. Climbing back down

I found coming back down to be much easier than going up. Perhaps it was because the views from the top had completely restored and revived me. The walk down probably only took about 20 minutes. Just be sure to watch your steps because there are some uneven rocks that you can easily slip on.

Photos From The Top Of Bai Tho Mountain

The photos that we got from Bai Tho mountain are my favourite from our whole Vietnam trip. They’re also probably some of my favourite travel photos of ours ever. As you may have already seen, there’s the famous photo taken from the green roof of a shed, and there’s also a small rock that makes for the perfect photo location.

It’s not overcrowded – there were only a few other people up there, so getting the “perfect” photo is easy enough. There are also some great city views from up here. I didn’t get any city photos because I was distracted by the beautiful sea and island views. But I’ve seen quite a few beautiful photos of Halong city from other travellers.

If you have the opportunity to visit Bai Tho mountain to take hundreds of stunning photos, I would highly recommend it! If you’re also thinking of visiting Hanoi, Check out this travel guide for spending 2 days in Hanoi.

November 2024 Update

As of November 2024, I have received the following update regarding Bai Tho Mountain.

There is now a guard that is seated at the “entrance gate” that is pictured above. They are now charging 500,000 VND per person and will not allow more than 10 people up a day. You will also not be allowed up during the morning or evening – only in the day (which is recommended anyway).

500,000 VND is quite a big fee, but the views are worth it. It should also be a bit easier now since the guard apparently opens the gate for visitors – so there is no need to climb through.

Vietnam Visa Requirements

If you’re planning a trip to Vietnam and need help with visa information, I would suggest checking out iVisa.com. The visa process can be very time-consuming, not to mention confusing, and iVisa strive to make the whole process simpler for travellers by taking care of all the nitty gritty details.

Just follow my iVisa application link here and you can do a quick check to see what is required and proceed with an application if necessary.

Travellling from Hanoi to Halong Bay is a lot easier than you may think. Adding both of these place to your Vietnam itinerary is a great idea. Have you been to Halong Bay before? Did you climb Bai Tho mountain? Let me know below.

Bai Tho Mountain (Poem Mountain) – The Mountain Of Wonderful Mysteries

Bai Tho Mountain (Poem Mountain), The mountain of wonderful mysteries

What is Bai Tho Mountain?

Referring to the place of Halong, many people will immediately think of Halong Bay, one of the 7 new natural wonders of the world. But this is not the only destination that attracts you when coming to this coastal city. This famous mountain is a familiar check-in place for young people to dragon land. For the people of Quang Ninh, Poem Mountain is located in the heart of the romantic Halong Bay, a proud historical place with beautiful natural scenery.

The mountain is 200m high compared to the sea level, although not too high, it is enough for tourists standing on the top of the mountain to have a panoramic view of Quang Ninh city as well as the entire Halong Bay. Conquering Poem Mountain is not too hard or exhausting as many people think. Because this mountain is not too high, it will only take you about 30 minutes to be able to set foot on the top of the mountain. The best time to see the scenery is at sunset and at sunrise. If you intend to catch the sunrise, climb from about 4:30 am and around 16:00 if you want to catch the sunset.

On the highest peak of Poem mountain, there is a red flag with a yellow star fluttering from the years of resistance against France, a reminder of the tenacious tradition of the Vietnamese people. On the journey to conquer the summit of Poem Mountain, visitors can see hundreds of undulating limestone mountains associated with the legend of the Dragon land. At the foot of the mountain, tourists also visit Long Tien Pagoda and Duc Ong Temple.

At night, you can not only watch the moon shining brightly in a corner of the sky, the twinkling stars are flashing, but also the mysterious Bay in the dark night. Besides, Halong City is shimmering with lights. The air here is fresh and cool all year round, so at any time you can take a climbing trip, conquering the peak of Bai Tho. You will enjoy, immerse yourself in nature, feel peaceful and take shimmering, unique photos!

THANK YOU!

What To Expect At Bai Tho Mountain

Once you begin the hike, the path consists of stairs until halfway up. From there it is rocks which you have to climb over, which can be difficult. The whole ordeal is completely worth it. You are rewarded with the best view of Halong Bay at the top.

Once you reach a small building, you can climb onto the roof, please take extra care when doing this, it is totally worth doing. It was the best view of Halong Bay we have witness. You will see the limestone formations and the tiny boats below, it is honestly the best experience we did in Vietnam.

The entrance to Bai Tho Mountain or Poem Mountain as it is also known as can be found here.

Find the blue door pictured below, this is the entrance to the house that will lead you to the Halong Bay Viewpoint. There will be a few dogs behind the door so be careful.

We read a lot about the scary dogs but the owner came out to calm them down. The only reason the dogs are barking so much is because she had given birth to puppies the day before. She was being a protective muma!

There are several puppies as you walk through the house and one even joins some climbers on the hike. We got to the top and a group of backpackers had the owner’s dog guiding the way.

We walked through the house, into the garden, and found the homeowner. We paid her 1000,000 VND [$3.38] and she was not open to anything lower. As we were shocked we had got this far so we happily paid her.

Not only did this make her happy but she helped us climb up. Without her help, I (Milly) wouldn’t have been able to do this climb. As we got to the wall other people were turning back, claiming it was too difficult for them to do.

Previously there was a gate to the left which most people climbed around. Since then the government has placed barbed wire around the edge to stop people doing this. This has resulted in people scaling the rock face and UNDER the gate, which someone has kindly cut a hole in.

How To Climb Bai Tho Mountain 🧗🏼

The first step was to bribe the homeowner, the next step is the rock face. You will have to scale this wall and slide under the fence at the top. If you are lucky like us, the homeowner will come and help you get up.

When I started to climb, she grabbed my legs and put my feet into the right holes. She also pushed me up until she couldn’t reach me anymore. I stupidly wore a playsuit, so she got a great view while I was climbing up. She was amazing and without her help, I wouldn’t have been able to climb this wall.

She doesn’t speak a word of English which is why she is very hands-on, but she wears gloves!

The final step is to climb up the stairs. The ground can be uneasy so take care where you are stepping. Halfway up, the stairs stop and the path consists of rocks which you will have to climb over.

The photos really do speak for themself as to how amazing this viewpoint in Halong Bay is. Even though this was a tough climb for me, I was so proud of my self for completing it. Even though we looked exhausted and defeated at the top, we didn’t care that we were dripping with sweat.

We sat on the edge and watched the eagles sore below us. It was insane to be the same height as these birds we had admired from the ground.

↠ The climb to the Halong Bay secret viewpoint depends on your personal fitness level. We read it could take anything between 20 minutes to an hour to reach the top. It took us two hours from start to finish, which included sitting at the top for a while and taking chúng tôi yourself enough time to get up and back down before it’s dark. You do not want to climb back down in the dark.

↠ Another thing to beware of is the house you must walk through to reach the Halong Bay Viewpoint is someone’s home. She might not always want people walking in and out so don’t be alarmed if she turns you away. We had no problem with her but we have read others have.

↠ This climb can be dangerous, the rocks are not secure and there are very steep drop-offs. Don’t do this alone but if you are planning to, then tell someone where you are going.

↠ Make sure you bring plenty of water! Like anywhere in Vietnam it is hot and humid and hiking up a mountain makes it that much worse.

How do I get to Bai Tho Mountain? Simply order a grab to this location. Once here, find the blue house to enter and up the stairs.

What do I wear to climb Bai Tho Mountain? Wear trainers and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.

Is it hard to climb Bai Tho Mountain? The initial rock climb is hard but doable. The walk-up is also doable, but take your time and don’t rush.

How long does it take to get up to the Halong Bay Viewpoint? It took us an hour and a half to climb up, sit at the top, take photos, and get back down again.

How much do I need to bribe the homeowner? This really depends on her mood, we paid 100,000VND each, others have paid less.

A lot of people who visit Halong Bay not stay within the town as they are here for a cruise, and will be sleeping on a boat. But if you want to visit Bai Tho Mountain you will most likely end up staying in Halong Town. Here are some accommodation options in Halong Bay.

The best time to visit Vietnam is in the dry season. Typically the dry season in Vietnam is between November – February, the temperature is a little cooler and their humidity and mosquitos are a lot less intense.

Things To Do In Halong Bay

There is so much to do in Halong Bay, most of which involve boat tours around the bay. We have listed some of our favorite things we did.

Vietnam is very easy to get around, from riding a motorbike across the country to using the extensive bus and train networks. Not only is an affordable but a lot of the time, “notice we didn’t say ALWAYS”, they are efficient and on time. We like to use 12Go to get around Vietnam and most of Asia. You can easily book online and check all of the bus and train time tables.

Wifi and Sim Card’s

If you are spending a long time in Vietnam then you are going to want to stay connected. The free Wifi you find in restaurants and hotels is reliable. But when you are out exploring having data on your phone is a must. We order out Sim Cards online so it is ready and waiting for us when we arrive.

We thought that the best way to see Halong Bay was by taking a cruise, but believe it or not, we were wrong. Hiking to the top of Poem Mountain, or Bai Tho Mountain as it is locally known, and seeing the cliffs from above was one of the most insane views we have ever seen. Read on to find out exactly how to get this view for yourself!

Seeing the incredible landscape of Halong Bay is usually top of most travellers’ bucket lists when they come to Vietnam. Thousands of towering limestone cliffs rise out of the water and create one of the most unique and spectacular landscapes we have ever seen. There is a hike up Hang Mua Cave in Ninh Binh that offers similar spectacular views and is known as Ha Long Bay on land.

Check out our full guide on a cruise around Bai Tu Long Bay to find out more: BEST BAI TU LONG BAY CRUISE

Witnessing the natural beauty of this landscape from above was absolutely next level. We are used to seeing places from the sky with our drone, but nothing can beat seeing somewhere with your own eyes. The cliffs extend out into the ocean for miles and the sheer number and size of these mini mountains blew us away. We did some great hikes in Vietnam and we’ve done some amazing hikes around the world and this ranks up there with the best of them.

Is Poem Mountain Open to Climb?

Updated December 2024 – It appears that authorities have once again closed Bai Tho Mountain to the public. This has happened many times in the past and the locals have always found a way to provide access to Poem Mountain for a fee. We are hopeful that access will be re-opened soon and we will try to update on here as soon as we know anything. Please let us know if you have any updated information.

Short answer – Yes! Legally, it appears the answer is no, but who ever let something like that stop them anyway?

Getting to Bai Tho Mountain

The Poem Mountain hike can be found in Halong City and we have pinned it below on the map to show you exactly where it is. Most people will be coming from Hanoi where there are daily busses to Halong City. The cheapest and easiest way to get here is by booking a bus with Bookaway. We booked all of our transport in Vietnam with them as they always seem to offer the best rates. You can book a ticket from Hanoi to Halong City here.

If you don’t fancy riding a scooter here, another great option is to take a Grab (popular app for ride-hailing similar to Uber). From the main touristy area of Bai Chay, it is a 15-minute drive to the base of the mountain.

Finding the Entrance

The entrance to the hike is located on Hang Noi street. We had read a few blogs and reviews about the mountain before we went and many of them said how difficult the entrance was to find. To access the entrance to the mountain, you first have to walk up through the house of a local lady. It is the entrance to this house that can be tricky to find.

You really do have to walk right through somebody’s house to reach the base of the mountain. We passed a couple of puppies, headed up the stairs and passed the kitchen and living room and came out into the backyard amongst the chickens.

This is where we finally met the infamous lady who owns the house with access to the mountain.

Entrance Fee

There is no set entrance fee to Poem Mountain. The lady will charge you whatever she feels like and it varies from person to person. We were charged 50,000VND ($2.15 USD) each after trying and failing to barter with her. The couple behind us paid 100,000VND each and we met another couple on our way up who only paid 25,000VND each.

You can try your best to haggle with her, but even if you have to pay 100,000VND per person it is still totally worth it. Plus, we didn’t feel like we had a lot of buying power when she is providing access to the mountain entrance.

Once you have negotiated an entrance fee, it’s time to break into the mountain. Having read numerous reviews, we saw that some people had to climb over barbed wire while others climbed through a hole underneath the main gate. At the time of hiking (June 2024), the authorities had closed both of these access points.

Now you have to scale a 10-foot rock wall and climb underneath the fence. They have literally carved away part of the mountain to allow tourists to gain access. It is a bit of a sketchy climb but the lady will help guide you up by showing you where to place your feet.

Poem Mountain Hike

Depending on your level of fitness, the hike to the top can take anywhere from 20 minutes to 1 hour. It took us around 30 minutes to reach the peak. It is not a particularly long hike, but it is straight up and steep the whole way. So although it is quite a short hike, it is fairly difficult. We had to stop every few minutes to catch our breath and drink some water. We went for sunset and even that late in the day the heat and humidity were still a killer.

The first two-thirds of the hike are up cement stairs that are still in very good condition. As it is officially closed, there are several sections where the trees and bushes are overgrown and you have to duck down low and shuffle underneath the greenery to get by. The last part of the climb is along mud and rocks and involves a bit more scrambling, but nothing too crazy.

The Summit

At the top there is plenty of space to hang out and a few different vantage points to enjoy. There were just 4 other people at the summit when we arrived for sunset. It was so peaceful and we love when we only have to share such an awesome place with just a few others.

Best Photo Spots

There is a green hut perched on the edge of the peak that you can climb on to. It looks kind of sketchy but it felt pretty secure to us. We went to the edge of the roof and enjoyed uninterrupted views of the bay. It is a wicked spot to take some seriously cool photos.

Just above this green roof is a rock that protrudes out of the mountain which we clambered to the top of to take some more photos, and again to enjoy the view.

Hike Down

Shortly before the sun set we started to make our way back down. We wouldn’t recommend climbing back down again in the dark as the top part of the mountain has a couple of slippery sections that were tricky to navigate down.

Travel Tips to Know Before You Go

Catch a Grab or rent a scooter – These are both cheap and easy options to reach the entrance to the mountain.

Wear trainers – The top section is difficult enough that you should wear trainers for this hike. Flip flops are not recommended.

Bring water – It is a short but tough climb so you will need to carry some water with you. There are several shops near the entrance where you can buy water before and after the hike.

Take some cash – You will need to pay the owner of the house to reach the entrance. Take a few hundred thousand Vietnamese dong with you just in case she feels like increasing the price that day.

Plan to take 2 hours – To climb to the top, enjoy the views at the summit and make your way back down again, we suggest taking at least two hours. The best time to enjoy the view is at sunset so make sure you time it right so you are not walking back down in the dark.

Pack your camera – Like we mentioned, the views at the top are unreal. Pack your camera so you can take some epic photos to remember your trip. They should look especially good at sunset.

Avoid after heavy rain – As some of the trail is unpaved and muddy, it would be dangerous after heavy rain.

It is moderately difficult – Even though it is short, the constant uphill climb makes this a tough little hike. Prepare to rest every few minutes on the way up.

Where to Stay

We looked at doing the hike on the same day as arriving from Hanoi and setting out for our our cruise around Halong Bay, but we just couldn’t squeeze it all in. It’s worth staying for at least one night in Halong City either before or after a Halong Bay cruise. Even if you weren’t planning on a cruise, it is worth the bus journey out here just for this hike.

Budget: Ha Long Bay Fancy Hostel – We stayed in a double room with A/C which cost 300,000VND ($12.93 USD) per night and included breakfast. The room had a private bathroom and was very comfortable. It is also in a great location right in the Bai Chay area. There are plenty of good places to eat nearby. We recommend the restaurant next to the hostel as it was super cheap and some of the better food we had in Vietnam.

Mid-range: The Bay, Ha Long Homestay – Great value for what you get. The homestay is super clean, well-decorated, with a cute garden patio to relax while still being right in the city centre. The owner and staff are also super helpful with all your tour booking needs.

Luxury: Vinpearl Resort & Spa Ha Long – With a private beach area, swimming pool, tennis court and fitness centre, this resort is the epitome of luxury. Not to mention, it is located on its own private island just off the Bai Chay shoreline.

Halong Bay Cruise Recommendation

As most people will do this hike as well as do a cruise, we thought we would offer up our recommendation. We went with Cristina Diamond Cruise and could not have been happier with this decision. Our stay was not sponsored – we paid full price. We just really enjoyed our stay, our guide, Lucky, was fantastic and every expectation was exceeded. We cannot recommend them enough.

This cruise actually visits Bai Tu Long Bay instead of Halong Bay. The landscape is the same, but there are fewer boats here which we thought was fantastic. We did a two-day, one-night trip but would have loved to stay an extra day.

Check out rates and availability for Cristina Diamond Cruise.

Final Thoughts

I’m not sure we can really put into words how awesome the Poem Mountain hike was. Most places we visit are pretty cool and get a couple of thumbs up from us, but this really was next level. I would definitely say it was the single best thing we saw in Vietnam and it’s one of the better views we’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing anywhere in the world.

Most people head straight from Hanoi to do their cruise around Halong Bay and then go straight back again. You’d be mad to miss out on this experience and you should stay at least one night in Halong City so you can do this hike. As it is just starting to grow in popularity, it still doesn’t attract too many tourists.

This is the hidden gem of Vietnam but it may not stay that way for long.

How to reach Bai Tho Mountain?

First, you can go to Hon Gai by catching a taxi from your hotel. Even the way lead to the mountain, which is near a small alley situated at number 102 Le Thanh Tong Road, is less known by many locals as it is quite difficult to find. It is better to ask the locals for direction when you are near this road. Then you will see a locked gate after going deep into the alley and do not be shy to ask the person living in the house right next to the door as she/he is exactly the gatekeeper. Alova cruise

Entrance fee

For the gatekeeper, who will open the gate and allow you to freely discover the mountain, you will need to pay 10,000 VND/person (around 0.5 USD).

What to prepare for the climb up Bai Tho Mountain?

Although not really easy, climbing this mountain is not too hard. You will actually need to hold on to trees and rocks to climb up at some point when there is no step anymore. It is highly recommended to being with you comfortable and non-slippery shoes. As it is hard to find the way to climb down when it gets dark, all climbing trips should be made before 4.p.m.

What To Expect At Bai Tho Mountain

The initial hunt for the Halong Bay viewpoint secret entrance is very exciting, it is what we imagine traveling to be like before the internet. Expect to bribe a homeowner, go through her house and scale a rock face. All of that is just the start of the climb.

How To Find The Secret Bai Tho Mountain Entrance 🔎

The entrance to Bai Tho Mountain or Poem Mountain as it is also known as can be found here.

Find the blue door pictured below, this is the entrance to the house that will lead you to the Halong Bay Viewpoint. There will be a few dogs behind the door so be careful.

Most locals will know why you are there and will point you in the right direction. Look for the barking dogs!

Not only did this make her happy but she helped us climb up. Without her help, I (Milly) wouldn’t have been able to do this climb. As we got to the wall other people were turning back, claiming it was too difficult for them to do.

How To Climb Bai Tho Mountain

🧗🏼

The first step was to bribe the homeowner, the next step is the rock face. You will have to scale this wall and slide under the fence at the top. If you are lucky like us, the homeowner will come and help you get up.

When I started to climb, she grabbed my legs and put my feet into the right holes. She also pushed me up until she couldn’t reach me anymore. I stupidly wore a playsuit, so she got a great view while I was climbing up. She was amazing and without her help, I wouldn’t have been able to climb this wall.

She doesn’t speak a word of English which is why she is very hands-on, but she wears gloves!

Once you have climbed up the 4m wall, the next step is to slide under a barbed-wire fence. The hole isn’t too big so we would recommend taking a small bag. On the way back down, we had to take it off completely and throw it down.

Last but not least, The famous green roof. The building at the top is where you can climb onto and watch the world go by. This green roof has been made famous by Instagram and it is the place to get a great photo. Equally, if you keep climbing up to the radio mask, there is a rock most people sit on to get great photos too.

The Best Halong Bay Viewpoint ⛰️

The photos really do speak for themself as to how amazing this viewpoint in Halong Bay is. Even though this was a tough climb for me, I was so proud of my self for completing it. Even though we looked exhausted and defeated at the top, we didn’t care that we were dripping with sweat.

The green roof was a lot easier to climb onto than we expected. It is very dangerous, which is why Olly climbed on first, to help me over. Once we got on the roof it became very windy, so we couldn’t move the tripod any higher.

We sat on the edge and watched the eagles sore below us. It was insane to be the same height as these birds we had admired from the ground.

Things To Be Aware Of When Climbing Bai Tho Mountain

☠️

↠ The climb to the Halong Bay secret viewpoint depends on your personal fitness level. We read it could take anything between 20 minutes to an hour to reach the top. It took us two hours from start to finish, which included sitting at the top for a while and taking photos.  Give yourself enough time to get up and back down before it’s dark.
